Infrastructure put to the test!

Up North On Climate - Line.png

Under a changing climate, more extreme weather events will put infrastructure to the test. Buildings are at risk of collapse from heavy snowfalls and freezing rain. Structures built on permafrost can shift as the ground thaws. The aging or under-designed transmission infrastructure in Ontario is vulnerable to extreme winds and freezing rain. Mid-winter warm spells contribute to the damage of roads. Extreme rainfall can affect drinking water quality, flushing of bacteria and pollutant into water sources stressing water treatment plant.

Here's what you and your community can do to prepare:

  • assess vulnerability & make a plan

  • plan for heavy snow load

  • monitor drinking water quality

  • build or retrofit for climate change

  • monitor wastewater lagoons

  • create a plan for power outages

  • maintain good community drainage

  • produce renewable energy

  • design roads to let water run off
